Excitement building for the Games

PRINCE GEORGE – Masich Place Stadium will see a lot of action over the next few days, as young athletes from the BC Summer Games begin arriving in the City.

To be honest with you, I can’t wait to see the whites of those kids’ eyes,” says Selen Alpay, Vice President of the 2022 BC Summer Games. “Their excitement, our excitement. I hope that will spur them to be as excited as we are. Can’t wait to have them here.”

Prince George-Valemount MLA Shirley Bond was one of the torch-bearers in 2015, when Prince George hosted hundreds of young athletes for the Canada Winter Games and she’s just as pumped about the summer games.

“I think it’s fantastic and it builds on the reputation this city has for hosting great events. We have a reputation as an amazing place for volunteers who step up and get engaged. We have incredible facilities that see world-class events.”

Since the 2022 BC Summer Games Committee was announced more than a year ago, it has been sprinting to get to where the city is today, ready to host 2303 athletes from 170 communities competing in 18 different sports. These athletes will be supported by 451 certified coaches and 161 officials.

“We have 17 directors on our Board of Directors,” says Alpay. “They have 108 chairs that support them. And then we have all the amazing volunteers that are supporting them. This city is full of amazing human beings and I am so proud to call this place home.”

“This is a chance for them to show off,” says Bond. “This is a chance for them to make new friends and, of course, there’s competition involved. But it is about friendship. It’s about travelling. It’s about that experience. And there’s nothing quite like sports to do that.”

“They put a lot of work,” says Alpay. “This is a turning point in their lives as well with the experiences that they gain. This could be their Olympics.”
