Two regional mayors running again

NORTHERN BC – The Regional District of Fraser Fort George Board room is full of mayors from the region and the question on everyone’s lips these days is ‘Who’s running for mayor?’ Just this week, incumbent Mayor Lyn Hall opted not to pursue a third term, while mayoral hopefuls Todd Corrigall and Christopher Wood have announced they plan to run this election.

The Mayor of Valemount, Owen Torgerson says, he fully plans to run for a second term.

“You know, there’s a lot of unfinished business that we weren’t able to get solved over this previous term,” he says. “A couple come to mind. We’re still working on our daycare construction as well as housing for women in transition. As well as a community-wide geo-thermal district energy project.”

It’s for that reason also, unfinished business, that Joan Atkinson is taking a run at her second term as mayor of Mackenzie, who says there is a lot on her plate in terms of that community’s lifeblood: forestry.

“There are so many things. We’re in the middle of our timber supply review. We should know our new Annual Allowable Cut in October, or November. Where is that wood going to go? Our community wants to be part of those discussions.”

She says Canfor is gearing up to turn over nearly a million cubic metres of timber to a pair of First Nations.

The nomination period for all candidates …. for municipalities and regional districts … starts of August 30th.
