School kids get to be fire chief for a day

Oct 22, 2022 | 5:51 PM

PRINCE GEORGE — On a Saturday morning, four lucky elementary school kids and their families got to spend the day with the team at Prince George Fire and Rescue, exploring the fire trucks, learning what it takes to be a firefighter and even getting to meet the chief himself.

For everyone involved, the day was full of fun and laughter, but for the kids it was all about being the chief for a day.

Prince George Fire & Rescue organizes the event with all elementary schools within the city limits. Each child is provided with a home escape template and then an entry form to be fire chief for a day.

Four lucky students get picked from a draw, and the winners got to visit the fire hall and be a fire chief for a day. The students got to meet Fire Chief Cliff Warner and sit at his desk. Each student also received a plaque and custom name plate. The kids also got to give one order to a firefighter, which mostly consisted of pushups or jumping jacks at this year’s event.

Lunch was provided for the students and their families at McDonald’s and on their way to lunch, each of the four winners got to ride in a fire truck.

This event is held every year and in 2023, four more lucky students will get their chance to be a chief for a day.
