PRINCE GEORGE— It’s National Volunteer Week (NVW) and many organizations are recognizing the impact volunteers have.
The Prince George RCMP works with several groups of volunteers who help to ensure the city is safer and more sustainable through programs and services.
There are six distinct groups of RCMP volunteers who contribute to the well-being of the community:
- Citizens on Patrol: patrol the city and report suspicious activity to on-duty frontline officers. Their efforts often result in arrests and charges of persons that may have otherwise gone undetected by police.
- Community Policing front desk volunteers: front line volunteers serving witness subpoenas, fielding inquiries and providing customer assistance to persons at the Community Policing and Victim Services counter at the Detachment.
- RCMP Auxiliary members: assist with crime prevention programs and services including special events.
- Restorative Justice Program: work with youth and adult offenders, providing an effective alternative to the criminal justice system with a focus on accountability, problem-solving and community healing.
- Safety Bear: the goodwill ambassador and mascot of the Prince George RCMP. Safety Bear attends special events and city-wide functions.
- Victim Services: provide emotional support for victims of crime or trauma.
