Cancer care gets boost in BC amidst lengthy wait times

PRINCE GEORGE – For most of the day at the BC Cancer Agency’s Centre for the North, the traffic at the front doors is steady as patients make their way in or out of the building.

The number of folks seeking cancer care in BC’s Northern Capital continues to grow, although the facilities here are already in high demand.

According to Shirley Bond, local MLA and the health critic for the BC Liberals, it takes someone over 40 days for an initial consult with an oncologist.

The lengthy waiting times for treatment and screening led the BC Government to fund an initial $440m investment in cancer care, with more increases expected.

“Nearly every British Columbian has been affected by cancer in some way, through their own diagnosis or that of a family member or friend,” said Premier David Eby. “With this significant investment in cancer care, we can prevent and detect cancer earlier and improve access to treatment. This will help save lives and improve the quality of life of British Columbians, now and into the future.”

Eby acknowledged the wait times are a lot longer than he’d like.

The provincial budget is expected on Tuesday which could provide further funding and details.
