Heat wave to bring hot temperatures to PG

PRINCE GEORGE — Temperatures will be the highest it has been this year in Prince George as the city welcomes its first heat wave later this week. Starting on Thursday and going all the way untill Sunday, Prince George might experience temperatures as high as 26 degrees. However, UNBC Meteorologist, Dr. Peter Jackson, explained it won’t last for too long.

“This particular little mini heat wave should taper off after the weekend. The longer range forecast is predicting some rain to occur sort of Sunday, Monday and cooler temperatures next week. Still fairly warm, but not in the mid-twenty territory”, he said.

With the city moving into spring conditions and the weather getting warmer, one big concern about this heat wave is the snow melt and flooding implications it might have. According to Jackson, the melt has been gradual and steady this year but the upcoming weather can contribute to it.

“We’ve had a fairly cool spring so far. This little heat wave, with some rain at the end of the weekend, will undoubtedly contribute to enhanced melt, especially at higher elevations. There is a risk certainly of higher stream levels, especially after the weekend”, he explained.
