Quesnel preparing for pool referendum

QUESNEL – A major facelift to Quesnel’s only indoor public swimming pool is the subject of an upcoming referendum on June 10th.

According to the City of Quesnel the swimming pool at the Arts and Recreation Centre in Quesnel is over 40 years old and needs to be upgraded to better meet the needs of the community and to attract new investment, potential workers, and residents to the region.

“It has served Quesnel really well but it is really time for an upgrade,” said Laurey-Anne Roodenburg, Councillor for the City of Quesnel and co-spokesperson for the referendum.

Officials say delaying upgrades could result in necessary repairs simply taking place over a longer period with more closures due to budgetary restrictions.

The city and the Cariboo Regional District are seeking to borrow up to $35 million to finance the project.

Included upgrades include a revitalized lap pool, a raised viewing area, a new swirl pool, modernized change rooms, a new exterior, a larger leisure pool, and the big ticket item a waterslide.

It may sound simple, but a water slide was one of the key demands from area residents who took part in the community engagement sessions.
