Consultations about at-risk caribou raising concerns

DAWSON CREEK- The consultations regarding caribou concerns are underway and to say that people in Northern B.C. are concerned with what might happen would be an understatement.

Public consultations around Northern B.C. communities are currently underway on the matter of the at-risk caribou in the region. One of the big concerns is the loss of jobs and access to the backcountry in these areas. The consultations were announced after the initial draft agreement that was set March 21 and they only have a month to complete them before the federal government deadline.

This is causing communities to voice their concern that one month is not enough time. There was a consultation in Dawson Creek last night and as city councillor Blair Lekstrom says, it was more of a presentation than a consultation.

“I would not call it consultation or engagement, it was pretty much more of a presentation which is one of the largest concerns all of us have, both elected officials in the region as well as the general public. The mood was one of grave concern.”
