New reception centre set up

PRINCE GEORGE – The reception centre was set up last week in the lounge of Kin One and it has now expanded to the atrium to greet evacuees and help them get services. To date, there are 125 evacuees registered with the City of Princ George. And there is an expectation of more.

“We anticipate this is going to be a long, hot summer. We’re in a little bit of a lull right now. Things seem to have stabilized all around us at the moment, but So we are activated. We’re ready for anyone that needs to come here for the duration. And we fully anticipate there will be at least one or two more formal evacuations to Prince George.”

And the evacuees are coming from the west.

“Yeah, we do have a few people that have come from the Cariboo. We actually have evacuees here right now from within the regional district of Fraser, Fort George. There is an alert or an evacuation within the regional district. So and earlier this summer we had people from up north, so we received from all four directions.”

This is the fourth activation for wildfire evacuation response since May and the Province has asked the City to be prepared to remain activated until September.

“So I think really what it means is just that we’re ready to receive. So we have the facility set up. It doesn’t mean that we’re necessarily going to be open every day. Right now, we’re only open from 12 til six Monday through Friday. We will increase those hours if an evacuation is called and we need to be here into the night or open up longer during the days. But, you know, it may be set up and completely closed for a few days if we don’t have evacuees in town at that time.”

There are roughly a thousand Northern BC households on Evacuation Alert that could be coming to Prince George should those alerts become orders.
