PRINCE GEORGE — In the early 1940’s a concept was theorized that there are three generalized body compositions that each person fits into. This is concept is still in use today and we learn more about the three body types in this week’s To Your Health.

Dr. W.H. Sheldon theorized the concept of three different body types or somatotypes back in the early 1940s and today many of the physiological markers and observations associated with each somatotype do actually exist in the greater population. Dr. Sheldon says that the three body types are: ectomorph, mesomorph and endomorph.

“Ectomorphs are the tall, slender, hard gainers that don’t put on weight very easily. They don’t put on muscle easily, but they also don’t put fat on easy either. So they’re built more for endurance.” – Cara Roberts, Owner, Active Body Nutrition

Our physiological characteristics determine the current somatotype, not the somatotype that determines our collective physiologies. Next, up is the endomorph.

“Endomorphs have a little bit softer, rounder look to them. them. They have a harder time with maybe digesting carbohydrates or utilizing carbohydrates, whereas you’re going to find the ectomorphs are really, really good with carbs … An endomorph also is really built for like powerful and explosive exercises.” – Cara Roberts, Owner, Active Body Nutrition

Last, but certainly not least, is the mesomorph.

“Now, smack down in the middle is going to be mesomorph…That’s the one that puts on muscle very easily. It’s defined because they don’t put on fat too easily either. So once you can kind of break it down and decide which category you fall under, then you can dig a little deeper into finding of the the how behind the why. So then you can learn how to eat, you can learn how to exercise, and you can learn what you’re going to have to do in order to reach those goals that you have.” – Cara Roberts, Owner, Active Body Nutrition
