Theatre for a cause: raising funds for fire protection

Miracle Theatre unveiled its eighth production to be performed in 2024: “A Comedy of Tenors” by Ken Ludwig.

Miracle Theatre is a theatre fundraising organization for the community, and over the years they have made sizeable donations to various community initiatives and organizations. For example, previous productions have raised $50 000 + for groups like United Way, and $150 000+ for the Prince George Hospice and Palliative Care Society. This year, their goal is $175 000 for a mobile wildfire structural protection unit.

“A single unit can protect up to 50 homes […] It really is the difference in protecting homes in a wildfire situation. if that wildfire is coming down on us and we can get those units out, there’s an over 90% success rate of structural protection units saving homes,” Manager of Emergency Programs for the City of Prince George Tanya Spooner explained.

Director Designer of Miracle Theatre Ted Price says choosing where to make the donation each year is difficult because there are so many worthy options, but given the state of last season’s wildfires, he said putting the money towards a wildfire structural protection unit was an obvious, urgent, and important choice.

“There’s one famous quote from Sophocles’s work that made an impression on me, it said: ‘fortune can not help those who do not act.’ And that always resonated with me, so we thought this was something where we could act and move forward by providing some equipment for Prince George,” Price said.

Tickets for the show will go on sale starting in January 2024, with the show running from March 13 to April 13. Tickets will be $37.50, and Price joked that if you don’t like the show, he will be offering a full money back guarantee, courtesy of Mayor Simon Yu. While that was an obvious joke, Mayor Yu said he would be on board because he strongly believes that no refunds will be coming his way, since the show promises to be fantastic and it’s supporting a wonderful cause. Given how much Miracle Theatre has contributed to Prince George over the years, Yu had nothing but positive things to say about their impact in our community.

“If we look at throughout the decades, the generosity our citizens have shown to our city is amazing. You look at all the events and the donations that people have done, we are a very generous community and we help each other […] I am so priveleged and honoured to be a member of Prince George,” Yu said.

Beyond the amount of money they donated, Yu was incredibly happy to see how Miracle Theatre is a project run through passion, and even if it wasn’t for all of the money having a team of people that believe so strongly in putting on great shows for the community is a fantastic thing in and of itself.

“If you use your talent to create an event and then have the funds to donate to a cause you believe, this is what we need to do more of in our community.”
