Fire Training in PG?

PRINCE GEORGE – Prince George Fire Rescue receives fire training, some of it’s at the airport, while much of it goes to Quesnel and sometimes as far afield as Texas. It’s why the city brought in a consultant to look at the feasibility of establishing a fire training center here, and it was found to be much needed.

“Yeah, Prince George is the Northern hub, so obviously we have a lot of industrial partners here in the region,” says Adam Davey, Director of Public Safety. “So it definitely is a well-suited location.”

The consultant’s report identified fire hall number three here on Highway 16 West as the ideal location for a fire center, predominantly because all the land behind it is City-owned.

“That’s why I suggest to the consultant during the meeting, perhaps don’t give up on the you know, maybe build right beside the future fire hall number five in the on the industrial site even though the city may not have the necessary land in that area,” says Simon Yu. “But we can definitely acquire some some land to make Fire Hall #5.”

“That has been talked about for several years now,” says Davey. ‘It was identified in our original 2016 Standards of Coverage review. And as the city grows and the population expands and therefore the tax base, it’s something we’ll be looking at in the future. I think the big piece with the standards of cover review is to really take the city’s fire department into the next generation to say, look, how does this look five, ten, 20 years out?”

But if a new training facility is a go, it isn’t cheap.

“That’s right. Yeah. We’re looking at a multiyear, multi-phased build-out. Obviously, this would have significant capital costs, so Council would consider that in future capital budget year.”

This latest report to Council constitutes Phase Two of the process in determining the feasibility of a training facility.

“So next steps, assuming Council approves that budget enhancement for 2024, we’d again look to hire a consultant to do that detailed work behind a van fire Hall to see how that fire training center can look over the next few years.”

The question of the $75,000 in funding to hire another consultant will be back before Council in the new year.
