PRINCE GEORGE – The second annual Sirens Cup is returning to Prince George on January 27, 2024. The charity hockey games features the Prince George RCMP squaring off against the Fire Department. Taking place on 3:30 p.m., the game will happen before the Prince George Spruce Kings take on the Salmon Arm Silverbacks 6:00 p.m.

Both the RCMP and Fire Department are looking forward to giving back to the community in a fun way

“We interact with firefighters on a regular basis when we go to 9-1-1 calls, but this is a nice opportunity to interact with them where there’s no emergency, no real sirens, and people are excited and happy to be there,” said RCMP Corporal Jennifer Cooper.

“It means a lot to everybody. We definitely want to put on a good show and be very entertaining for the community,” added Prince George Charitable Firefighters Society Director Jason Geddes.

All funds raised are going towards charitable causes; for the RCMP the money is supporting the Copr for Cancer Tour de North, which supports childhood cancer research and services at the Canadian Cancer Society. The firefighters are sending money to the PG Charitable Firefighters Society, which gets involved in the community in many ways.

“Last year we purchased a pediatric cancer pump for our cancer clinic up here, something that they were in great need of. And then a little while ago, we just purchased about $2500 in toys for the Christmas Wish breakfast to go back into the community for kids that might not otherwise get those types of things,” Geddes explained.

Last year the Firefighters won the Sirens Cup, but the RCMP are motivated for some payback.

“We definitely have our eye on the cup now that we know the firefighters strength and capabilities. We’ve been training and working with our guys to make sure that we bring definitely our A-game,” Cooper said.

Whiel the RCMP has been training, the Firefighters say they aren’t giving the Cup away without a fight.

“We’ve been working on some strategies, I think that we’re definitely going to see a more motivated group this year out of the RCMP. I think that our guys are going to work really hard to try to repeat and hopefully come away with the victory,” Geddes said.

The Sirens Cup will take place on January 27 at 3:30 p.m. at Kopar Memorial Arena.
