2023 a reality check for long-time MLA Morris

Dec 29, 2023 | 12:09 PM

PRINCE GEORGE — MLA for Prince George-Mackenzie Mike Morris has been in politics for over 10 years now, but his time in politics is coming to a close as he announced his retirement back in March.

He announced that would not be running in the next election and health issues played a big part in that decision, being diagnosed with bladder cancer and having surgery in May. Morris said that it was a reality check for him.

“I’ve got seven grandchildren. I’ve got a wonderful family. I’ve got lots of lakes that I haven’t fished a lot of of things that I haven’t done that, you know, this life as a politician, as an MLA, have prevented me from doing.” – Mike Morris, MLA, Prince George-Mackenzie (BCU)

Morris is a veteran of B.C. politics, first entering the legislature in Victoria back in 2013, and has held many cabinet positions including Minister of Public Safety and Solicitor General. Now in opposition, Morris acknowledged the challenges that come with being on the other side of the aisle.

One highlight of 2023 for Morris was being acknowledged by the Canadian Wildlife Federation, by receiving their Legislator of the Year award for the work he’s done with biodiversity, climate and wildlife conservation.

Kiel Giddens was announced at the BC United Party candidate that will run for the Prince George-Mackenzie riding in the 2024 provincial election.

After well over 50 years in public service, Morris is looking forward to retirement, defining it as “when you can afford to quit your day job and do whatever you want for as long as you want or as short as you want for as much as you or as little as you want.”
