Caledonia Nordic Ski Club prepping their hills for championships

PRINCE GEORGE – It’s kind of hard to ski and do outdoor sports when there’s no snow on the ground. And with the Para Biathlon World Championships and Para Nordic World Cup Finals coming to town in about two months it’ll be a necessity to have some snowflakes on the hills.

“By the time March hits, of course, we’ll hope to have a lot more snow than we have now. With regards to kind of how we prepare, it actually all starts right from Fall.”

– Kevin Pettersen, Director of Competitions, Caledonia Nordic Ski Club

Pettersen says that the maintenance of the trails like mowing the grass is a big factor prior to snowfall.

“We groom the trails in the Fall and then we can operate with as little as probably 15 centimeters.”

What if those 15 centimeters don’t fall?

“We have 31 hydrants spread out across the stadium areas and all the competition trails. And we have we have nine snow guns that we move around to to make snow.”

The snow guns use about 90 gallons of water a minute to produce the fluffy flakes, but the temperature outside has to be just right, sitting anywhere between minus 5 to minus 10.

The Championships start March 5 and run until the 17.
