Arnica Counselling welcomes new ADHD Life Coach

PRINCE GEORGE – Patrycja Legut is Arnica Counselling Inc’s first ever ADHD coach. Despite ADHD being one of Canada’s most common neuro-divergencies, Legut said she couldn’t find any ADHD specialists for her daughter in Prince George, so she wanted to fill the gap by getting officially certified through the one year program offered by the International Coaching Federation.

As an ADHD coach, Legut specializes in helping adults with ADHD or parents whose children have ADHD to help develop and explore different strategies to improve one’s day to day life.

“I worked with a client who came to see me because they were stuck for seven months, unable to apply for their internship. They were in the grip of ADHD paralysis. So what we did together, we managed to chunk this overwhelming task of applying for their internship into smaller, manageable steps, which they were able to complete. And they managed to apply and get the internship,” Legut explained.

“Another example would be a client coming to a session with a very mundane issue of doing the laundry in an ADHD friendly way. It turned out it wasn’t really the issue, the issue was lack of communication with their spouse. So we pivoted to that, we worked on that, and the result is that they have better communication patterns with their spouse and the family is overall happier,” she continued.

ADHD is commonly associated with physical hyperactivity, but Legut says that’s just the tip of the iceberg. She says it also can come with difficulties planning, prioritizing time management, organization, sustaining attention, initiating a task, and more. Because of this, her coaching is tailored to each individual person to find what specifically they may be struggling with, and how she can work with the person to find solutions.

“No issue is too small or too big for ADHD life coaching. It’s a very holistic modality. We deal with clients’ professional lives, personal lives, with their emotions,” Legut said.

Arnica Counselling’s co-owner and registered clinical counsellor Tricia Wright explained ADHD itself isn’t a mental illness, it’s a neuro-divergence that impacts how people interact with the world. However, ADHD can often be linked to mental illness like anxiety or depression, so having a specialist like Legut could be incredibly beneficial.

“(ADHD coaches) have the skills to understand how ADHD works in people’s lives and how we can put in strategies. What is specifically happening to you in your anxiety and what’s leading to it? How do you manage it and how do you prevent it? And then if the ADHD coach notices that maybe this is a mental illness, maybe this is bigger than ADHD, then we have therapist right here to help with that,” Wright said.

Wright said another huge benefit is the difference in approach. Therapy is often a deeper experience, meaning the day-to-day difficulties may not get a lot of attention. This is where Legut can step in and offer concise and pointed work towards these things, which in turn can benefit the person’s mental health.

“An ADHD coach is working through those really small goals that can help the person move forward. And it’s time bound and it’s really goal limited in a way that therapy isn’t. An ADHD coach is really specific and it’s: ‘how is ADHD affecting your life and how do you want it to be different’,” Wright said.

While space is limited, Legut says she is still accepting new clients who may need help managing their ADHD. If the demand is high enough, Arnica Counselling hopes to bring in even more ADHD coaches.
