Three B.C. Winter Games competitions cancelled due to warm weather

PRINCE GEORGE—The Lhtako Quesnel 2024 B.C. Winter Games will take place February 22-25 but unfortunately due to a lack of snow the B.C. Alpine Ski, Freestyle B.C., and B.C. Snowboard Organizations will not be in attendance.

Troll Ski Resort, the mountain that would host those specific competitions, lacks a significant snowpack and with an absence of heavy snow on the horizon the coaches and B.C. Games Society have come to this final decision.

“Mountain-based sports, already facing a difficult and shortened winter season, require significant snowpack and technical venue builds to run safe and meaningful competition,” states David Conlin, Communications Manager for the BC Games Society.

While there are other mountains in the region, according to the B.C. Games Society it takes over 18 months to plan the Games, reserve mountain space, ensure that technical requirements are met and secure enough volunteers to support the events.

Biathlon B.C. and Cross Country B.C. will still be attending the Games regardless of the conditions. Both organizations are exploring modified scenarios for on-snow competitions or dryland events. Nordic Provincial Sport Organizations will update all participants directly with updated programming and preparation instructions prior to travel to the Games.

As the B.C. Games are an important milestone for athletes, the withdrawn sports organizations are exploring single-sport training or competition opportunities for participants and will continue to collaborate with the B.C. Games Society to incorporate elements of the Games experience.
