PRINCE GEORGE— The Western Hockey League has named Prince George Cougar Hunter Laing the Kal Tire WHL Rookie of the Week for February 5-11, 2024.

At 17 years-old Laing leads all rookie WHL players in goals with three lamp-lighters, an assist and a plus-two rating as Prince George went 2-0-0-0.

During the game against the Victoria Royals on Friday, the 6’6″ right winger took advantage of the second power play with a rebound goal off the end boards. This marks Laing’s eighth goal this season. The Cougars finished with a 4-1 win against the royals.

Laing successfully secured his first three-point game in his WHL career in the rematch against the Royals on Saturday. His first goal involved him in a two on one with Laing evading the pair of defenders and scoring a backhand. Three minutes later he rebounded Ephram McNutt’s shot into the goal. In the third period Laing would get his third point when he served up an assist to Borya Valis. The Cougars seized victory with a 9-6 decision.

The Kelowna, B.C. product made his WHL debut at 15 years old after being selected by Prince George in the second round, 33 overall in the 2021 WHL Prospects Draft. He joined the team full-time in the 2023-24 season.

Laing is ranked 108 in North American by the NHL Central Scouting Service ahead of the 2024 NHL Entry Draft in June.

The Cats (35-15-0-2) have won three straight and have points in seven of its last 10 games to remain atop the WHL B.C. Division.

The Cougars will be back on the ice February 16 against the Kamloops Blazers (16-30-3-2).
