2024 Winterfest once again a big hit with community

PRINCE GEORGE – 2024 Winterfest was as busy and energetic as ever. The annual community favourite event was packed with community members looking to enjoy a great festival and weekend.

One of the highlights among several was Peter Vogelaar’s ice scultping. Crafting thrones, angel wings, an ice slide, and other beautiful pieces, he explained that despite how precise ice sculpting is, a lot of the work is done with a chain saw! Rather surprisingly, he says a chainsaw can be quite precise, although other tools like chisels help with the fine details. Having been an ice sculptor for more than 20 years, Vogelaar has sculpted just about anything you can imagine, but he says the work never gets old.

“As soon as people see this ice they want to touch it, they want to get into it. It’s magical, the clearness, I think that’s what attracts me too, its beautiful. To me, just taking something so simple as frozen water and turning it into art, that’s fun for me,” he said.

The sculptures were just one of many things to enjoy, as other highlights included a smore contest, street hockey with the Cariboo Cougars, and of course the return of everyone’s favourite mini-railway to take families on a fun loop around the centre of Veteran’s Plaza.

Beyond just being a fun event, Downtown Prince George’s Executive Director Colleen Van Mook says Winterfest is also great because it helps promote local business. While businesses can show their stuff at Winterfest itself, it also gets more people downtown, where they can see what else there is to offer and perhaps stop by a restaurant or store after the festival.

“We really want people to come downtown and see how great our local businesses are downtown, and make a day of it. Here is some family fun, right here at Downtown Winterfest, but you can also visit the amazing businesses we have in our downtown,” she said.
