CounterAttack program begins this weekend to catch impaired drivers
PRINCE GEORGE— According to ICBC impaired driving-related crashes where someone is killed or injured increase by 27 per cent every summer in B.C. This increase is even larger in the north where these crashes increase as high as 63 per cent.
This is why ICBC and police are launching a campaign this summer to reduce impaired driving on roads. ICBC says that while the CounterAttack roadchecks – that began in 1977 – have reduced impaired driving, around 61 lives are lost every year because of it.
Starting on the weekend of June 15, police will be looking for impaired drivers at CounterAttack roadchecks throughout the province. ICBC adds that “if your activities this summer involve alcohol or other drugs, plan ahead to get home safe.” Some tips to get home safe include taking a taxi, rideshare, public transit, or setting up a designated driver before hand.
