Residents asked to be proactive suppressing bear attractants

PRINCE GEORGE — There have been a few bear sightings in the Prince George area already this year.

Some have been seen in what’s called walking hibernation, which is when the bear’s system isn’t in full function and won’t be for a couple of weeks. Because of this, bears will be out getting some exercise and also looking for food. However, not much natural food is available until the snow clears which could cause issues in some neighbourhoods.

If a bear does end up in your yard, you’re asked to shoo it away by making noise at a safe distance and then remedy any attractants that may have brought it there in the first place.
