Police-reported crime up 2% in 2023
PRINCE GEORGE — National crime statistics in Canada for 2023 have been released and the volume and severity of police-reported crime in Canada, which is measured by the Crime Severity Index (CSI), has increased for the third consecutive year, up 2% in 2023.
Large shifts in certain types of crime led to an increase in the non-violent crime, such as fraud and shoplifting, while Violent crime numbers remained virtually unchanged. For the 2023 set of statistics, the most dangerous cities in Canada list was omitted, something that Councillor Trudy Klassen is glad to see gone.
“Government is supposed to be there to help people, but by ranking cities against each other to show who was the most dangerous city in Canada that was hurting everyone and it wasn’t helping anyone, so it’s a huge relief.” – Councillor Trudy Klassen, City of Prince George
