New intergenerational subdivision coming to First Nation community near Fort St. James

NORTHERN B.C.— A groundbreaking ceremony took place on July 31 in the Nak’azdli Whut’en to commemorate the construction of a new subdivision.

The Mountianview Subdivision will host 32 intergenerational homes and is in collaboration with BC housing. While a housing survey in 2017 indicated the community is 170 units short, Paul Bird, a local Councilor says the community is glad to begin working towards that goal and that it will see major benefits aside from a roof over peoples heads.

“We’re going to have 10 units for the younger generation, 10 units for our elders and 12 units, townhouse type units, for our families,” say Bird “Our elders tend to be lonely and when you combine them with our children in the same complex, that solves a lot of problems. Anywhere, from loneliness all the way to our culture and our language.”
