‘One voice’: MOU signed on regional advocacy

PRINCE GEORGE — A memorandum of understanding (MOU) was signed between all levels of government at city hall on Wednesday, with the intent of providing a joint, regional response to local challenges.

The MOU was signed by MPs Bob Zimmer and Todd Doherty, MLAs Shirley Bond and Mike Morris, Chief Dolleen Logan of the Lheidli T’enneh First Nation, Prince George Mayor Simon Yu, and Regional District of Fraser-Fort George Chair Lara Beckett. MP Zimmer and MLA Morris were not present at signing ceremony.

The MOU outlines the following regional priorities:

  1. Expanding addiction treatment options, with a focus on establishing a regional treatment center;
  2. Enhancing regional healthcare services, particularly in staffing;
  3. Ensuring timely public safety responses that address both immediate needs and root causes; and
  4. Promoting economic development opportunities, including tools to address local infrastructure.

MLA Shirley Bond has been a strong advocate for all levels of government working together on various issues, throughout her political career.

‘”One of the things that I have learned on my political journey is that when people can speak together with one voice, it gets a lot more attention.” – MLA Shirley Bond

Bond notes that this MOU is much more than signatures on a piece of paper.

“Today is really the beginning of a promise to the people of Northern British Columbia that says ‘we hear you.'” – MLA Shirley Bond

“It is crucial for all levels of government to work together in unison for the community, rather than operating in silos,” said Mayor Simon Yu.

The MOU and its priorities will be revisited annually.
