YWCA Program Bringing Support to Immigrant Women Across British Columbia
YWCA Metro Vancouver announces the expansion of the YWCA Axis program to Prince George and other areas across British Columbia, extending vital support to immigrant women who left violent environments and are seeking a fresh start.
Launched in 2021, YWCA Axis is a trauma-informed, 12-week program for self-identified immigrant women who have left violent situations. This accessible program offers online and in-person meetings in a flexible schedule to help participants regain confidence and overcome the impacts of violence. Participants have access to personalized, one-to-one career support offered in nine languages to meet women where they are at in their journeys as newcomers in Canada. YWCA Axis helps women work towards their career goals or apply for further education to enable financial independence and stability. To date, the program has helped more than 360 women plan a sustainable career in Canada.
“The program provides first-language services to immigrant women who have experienced violence and trauma. It helps them prepare for employment by building confidence and resilience through individualized training plans designed specifically for skills development and readiness to enter the labour market.” explains a YWCA press release.
YWCA Axis program participants receive skills training aimed at overcoming the effects of violence, enhancing resilience and boosting self-confidence. The program also connects women to YWCA’s Stopping the Violence counselling services or up to 10 free counselling sessions through WorkBC. In addition, participants benefit from job development services, employer contacts, alongside other wrap-around supports to foster overall well-being.
