Spruce Kings back after All-Star break with some new faces

PRINCE GEORGE— The Spruce Kings return to Kopar Memorial Arena tonight for their final home meeting with the Surrey Eagles. They have a 2-2 record against them, and last met three weeks ago, but have had some major roster changes since then.

Three of their top forwards and their highest scoring defenseman have since been acquired by Quebec Major Junior Hockey League teams, following the CHL to NCAA eligibility rule change.

With Skogen Schrott, Lucas Veilleux, Brogan McNeil and as of Monday, Evan Bellamy on their way out, Kings General Manager Mike Hawes has been busy acquiring replacements.

The two most recent forwards added to the team, came from a couple Texas organizations in the North American Hockey League (NAHL).

Nick Metelkin was the first acquired on January 9, just in time to make his debut in a successful weekend against Alberni and special Indigenous Night celebration before the All-Star break.

“It was surreal. The jerseys were sick one of the nights, so that was that was a plus and first sweep in I don’t know how many years, so that was great,” said Metelkin on his debut at home.

The latest forward addition was Toronto native Corson Maguire who was picked up from the Amarillo Wranglers of the NAHL, the same team Taylor Harnett coached before joining Prince George this season.

“He’s a great human, a great teammate and I think that’s the biggest box we checked off right away. He’s got a great skill set, he’s coachable and he understands how to play the game the right way,” Kings Associate Coach Taylor Harnett on the teams new addition.

Maguire’s debut will take place tonight, in PG’s only midweek game at Kopar Memorial Arena this season.

“I’m excited. Luckily I had this (past) week to kind of get my feet under me and find a way into the lineup. Whatever the team needs, I’m able to bring. I’m excited to get the games going, play with the team and start fresh,” said Maguire ahead of his first game in the BCHL.
