PRINCE GEORGE – The Prince George Spruce Kings have been in the community for over 50 years, but will that longevity continue? That’s the question following recent reports that the league’s most successful franchise, the Penticton Vees, may be moving to the WHL next season. CKPG News spoke to the Kings’ longtime general manager to discuss the future.

Mike Hawes says there are ups and downs in the life of a hockey franchise, but he assures the fans they’re on solid ground.

“ Within the league, we’re not panicked. We know the foundation that we have within the B.C. Hockey League and the member teams, and that foundation is solid and strong. And because of that, we know we’re going to continue to be a powerful league that puts out a good product.”

Contrary to some reports on social media, Hawes says the strong fan base and community support around the team help them survive through thick and thin.

Hawes has not received official confirmation that other teams are leaving the league. However, Councilor Ron Pollio says having a well-established team like the Kings is a massive benefit to the community.

The BCHL has yet to comment on what will happen next for the Penticton Vees, but regardless of that, the Kings hope to create memories that will last another 50 years.
