City of Prince George seeks to clear Moccasin Flats
PRINCE GEORGE — The City of Prince George filed a claim Wednesday (Feb.26) in the BC Supreme Court seeking an order to facilitate the closure of what remains of Moccasin Flats.
In 2021, the Court ordered that unsheltered individuals be permitted to camp indefinitely in the “green space at the end of 5th Avenue” until shelter with suitable daytime facilities was made available to everyone camping there.
In a media statement, the City notes “Since shortly after that 2021 Order was made, the City has been working diligently with the Province to bring more supportive, transitional and low-barrier housing to Prince George. This has led to a surge in the number of indoor spaces available for people sheltering outdoors in the City, including the completion of the transitional housing site at 3rd Avenue & London, which was created with funding from the City and the Provincial HEART & HEARTH initiatives.”
The City continues that “this housing fulfils the conditions set out in the 2021 Order and is now accessible to people currently sheltering in the LPBE. The City looks forward to the opportunity to demonstrate to the Court the great progress that has been made with respect to shelter for the City’s unhoused population.”
