PG Blizzard club prepares to host BC Short Track Championships

PRINCE GEORGE— After hosting the 2025 Canadian Junior Short Track Open, the Prince George Blizzard Speed Skating Club is preparing for the BC provincial short track championships on the Olympic-sized rink at Kin 1.

“This brings together all of the top skaters, from ages nine to, I think, our oldest skater is about 70, from throughout B.C., to come and compete and see who’s the best,” said the President of the PG Blizzard Club, James McIntosh.

There will be a field of 180 skaters at the meet this weekend, coming from the Lower Mainland, Central Okanagan, Fort St. John, Fort Saint James, Mackenzie and of course local athletes from Prince George as well.

“Here with the Prince George Blizzards we have a lot of skaters that love to race. We had about 30 skaters skate in Fort Saint John in January and we’ve got about 20 skating this weekend,” said Vice President of the PG Blizzard Club, Josh Van der Meer.

A big reason Prince George keeps getting chosen to host national and provincial events is because the facilities that they provide.

“We have the best facility in the province. We have the best ice in the province. So let’s showcase, let’s put on a show and show the rest of the province what it takes to put on a good speed skating event,” said McIntosh.

The racing starts at 9 a.m. on both days this weekend on the Olympic-sized rink at Kin 1.
