PRINCE GEORGE — Members of the Trinity United Church Prince George gathered outside City Hall Monday afternoon (June 9).

They were there for a ceremonial flag raising and proclamation acknowledging that this is the centenary year of the United Church of Canada.

Trinity United Church is part of the United Church of Canada that formed June 10, 1925.

Lead Minister Reverend Dr. Bob K. Fillier says the United Church was formed through the union of several existing Christian denominations “to form a uniquely Canadian expression of the Christian faith.”

He notes the Church is the only denomination in Canada that was formally created by a vote in the House of Commons which he notes also has a long history in Prince George.

“The church that is now known as Trinity was here even before the City was incorporated – back when it was Fort George in 1910. A pastor showed up with a canvas tent, where there was room to sleep in the back half of the tent while the soup kitchen, bible study, and worship occurred in the front portion of the tent.

“That’s really indicative of who we’ve been as the City has grown up and changed and morphed along the way. A commitment to being an active part of our city, feeding people, providing spaces for worship, or spiritual formation and music.”
