Summer patrols intensify as police target impaired drivers on highways and waterways

PRINCE GEORGE – As summer vacations roll in, we embrace the open road, sunny skies, and, unfortunately, some individuals who opt to drive under the influence. In response, law enforcement in the north is coming together to tackle the issue of impaired driving, whether it be behind the wheel or while operating a boat.

RCMP officers throughout the region are working to get impaired drivers off the roads and lakes by collaborating with other law enforcement agencies.

“We also have our helicopters that we could use, to potentially patrol any of our bodies of water that are around here to ensure the safety of everyone. No matter what kind of conveyance you’re operating, if it’s a motorized conveyance, it doesn’t have to be a car.”

The North District Highway Patrol remains committed to targeting roads that are known for having a significant presence of impaired drivers.

“ We’re seeing an increase in dangerous driving behaviours… such as taking dangerous risks, to pass other vehicles, higher speeds and just overall, dangerous driving behaviour from the impaired drivers.”

The RCMP urges drivers to make sure they drive sober and stay focused on the road.

Drivers can expect to see enhanced patrols and check stops from BC Highway Patrol, especially on long weekends or for special events.
