Sharks pick Cougars goaltender Joshua Ravensbergen in first round of 2025 NHL Draft

LOS ANGELES — Joshua Ravensbergen made Prince George Cougars history Friday (June 27) night, after the San Jose Sharks took him in the first round of the 2025 NHL Draft.

The 18-year-old North Vancouver native was the 30th overall pick making him the highest-drafted goaltender in Cougars franchise history, eclipsing the old record (third round, 90th overall in 2004) held by Justin Pogge. He was the top ranked North American goaltender, and the second goalie drafted this year.

“Feels incredible. it’s such a cool moment hearing your name called. It’s something I’ll remember forever,” Ravensbergen said, in a post-draft media availability.

Originally undrafted in the WHL Prospects Draft, Ravensbergen was listed and signed by the Cougars, and he made his debut in the 2023-24 season. In 89 career WHL games, he has a 59-17-4-2 record and a 2.78 goals-against average and a .901 save percentage.

“Makes it so cool. First time getting drafted feels absolutely unbelievable,” Ravensbergen added. “After not getting drafted in the Dub, I always believed I was going to get here, but the moment of it actually happening feels so cool.”

It’s the fifth consecutive season where at least one Cougar has been drafted into the NHL, and the second straight year with a first-round pick, after forward Terik Parascak was taken 17th overall by the Washington Capitals in 2024.
