NEW YORK — The New York Mets have optioned Prince George native Jared Young to triple-A Syracuse.

The move, which was announced Friday (June 27), was to make room for third baseman Mark Vientos on the Mets 26-player roster. Vientos missed most of June because of a right hamstring strain he suffered on June 2.

The 29-year-old Young – who went to Prince George Secondary School – has primarily been used as a designated hitter this season.

In 41 at bats over 18 games this season, Young had seven hits, including three home runs and four RBIs, with a .171 batting average and a .642 OPS. He also played one game in left field this season, and he got the final out when he pitched in the Mets’ 9-0 loss to the Tampa Bay Rays on June 15.
