PRINCE GEORGE – Many individuals working or running businesses in downtown have reached a tipping point. On Thursday evening, some of them had the chance to share their experiences with local and visiting politicians at a banquet hall at the Ramada Hotel, expressing their concerns about the levels of crime and vandalism they have faced.

A microphone was passed around a room of about 70 people, who spoke about their frustration with the criminal behaviours in the downtown area.

Many who attended the evening meeting sought a better understanding from politicians about the measures they are taking to find a solution.

“ Amending the Criminal Code of Canada and amending bail laws is a federal responsibility. But the administration of justice is a provincial responsibility. And so that means making sure that we have enough courts open, that we have enough prosecutors, and that the resources for the prosecution service are adequate.” -Elenore Sturko, BC Conservative PartyCritic for Solicitor General and Public Safety

A local speaker expressed concerns that some non-profit organizations are not acting as good neighbours. Some business operators are noticing a decline in foot traffic, largely due to the perception that crime is prevalent in the downtown area.

All the information gathered during the evening will be compiled and shared with those in Victoria.
