PRINCE GEORGE — Special Olympics Prince George registration takes place Saturday at Art Knapp Plantland at 4411 Kimball Road.

It will take place from 10 a.m. until 2 p.m. where you’ll have the chance to register athletes in summer sports like bocce, 10 pin bowling and track and field. There is also a variety of winter sports to participate in as well including curling, snowshoeing and five pin bowling.

Organizers say there are opportunities for athletes to get involved at a young age.

“We are going to be developing some new exciting programs here in Prince George. There are opportunities Special Olympics BC has had in the past, they’re called ‘active start’ and ‘fundamentals.’ ‘Active start’ is a program for two to five year olds and ‘fundamentals’ is an activity for six to 11 year olds,” says Prince George Special Olympics Coordinator Peter Goudal, who adds that pediatricians recommend early intervention for kids with intellectual disabilities.

“It’s a great start. Your pediatrician will always say early intervention is the key to assist any person with an intellectual disability. And we’re going to be providing an early intervention opportunity for those athletes and for those parents.”

There will be a fundraising BBQ and bake sale so organizers say it’s a great opportunity for new and returning athletes, coaches and volunteers to come and see what Special Olympics is all about.
