PRINCE GEORGE — The 45th Annual Terry Fox Run will take over the bandshell in Lheidli T’enneh Memorial Park this Sunday (Sept. 14).

The annual event helps raise money for cancer research, and organizer Sylvia Masich says the family friendly event is open to everyone.

Speaking on CKPG Today, Masich said registration for this year’s Terry Fox Run starts at 9:00 a.m. and the event will get underway with opening ceremonies at 9:40 a.m.

“It’s a big year,” Masich, who works for Pattison Media station 101.3 The River, said. “It’s 45 years since Terry started his Marathon in 1980. This is 46 years since he ran in Prince George. It’s going to a fun day in the park to celebrate a Canadian icon.”

Masich says part of this year’s three kilometre route will retrace Terry Fox’s footsteps from the 1979 Prince George to Boston Marathon.

“Patricia Boulevard and Taylor Drive is what he ran on and its pretty unique because most Terry Fox Runs across Canada don’t follow in Terry’s footsteps because he ran on the highway,” Masich said. “Runs don’t happen on the highway so we’re one of the few communities that actually get to follow in his footsteps, which is pretty special.”

The theme of this year’s Terry Fox Run is Finish It, and Masich says organizers are hoping to raise $20,000 at this year’s event.

“You don’t have to collect funds, but its great if you do because the research that they’re doing is changing lives and its changing outcomes,” Masich said. “Its helping people in Prince George who are currently battling cancer.”
