To Your Health: Warts
PRINCE GEORGE – Health experts indicate that warts are more common than expected. Sometimes, these surprising skin growths can be pretty stubborn. In this week’s To Your Health, we explore the causes of wart formation.
Specific strains of the human papillomavirus cause warts by infecting the outer layer of the skin. While generally harmless, warts spread easily through direct contact and can even survive on communal surfaces such as gym equipment and public showers.
The most common type of warts appears on the hands and fingers, while plantar warts develop on the soles of the feet, often causing discomfort with everyday movement. Typically, the body’s immune system will eventually eliminate the virus, but this process can take several months or even years.
