Year-over-year unemployment rate in Prince George increases to 9.4 per cent in September

PRINCE GEORGE — Tough news on the jobs front in Prince George.

Statistics Canada says the year-over-year unemployment rate increased from 5.4 per cent in September 2024 to 9.4 per cent last month.

Labour analyst Vincent Ferrao says the biggest losses came in wholesale and retail sales and educational services with smaller losses in manufacturing and public administration. He says there was a slight uptick of jobs in transportation and warehousing.

The number of people working in Prince George dropped from 53,900 in September 2024 to 48,300 last month. The participation rate – the number of people working aged 15 and older – also dropped from 65.9 per cent in September 2024 to 58.5 per cent last month.
