PRINCE GEORGE – This weekend, Prince George is welcoming over 300 cross-country skiers from all over British Columbia for the Teck BC Cup Number One, made possible by a dedicated team of local volunteers. The two-day event, held at the Caledonia Nordic Ski Club, marks the first stop on the provincial cup series. Here, athletes will earn essential points towards the BC Championships and chase their Olympic aspirations.

This weekend will see a significant increase in activity in Prince George, with over 300 registered athletes and 70 coaches arriving from 30 to 40 different communities across the province. The weekend kicks off with Saturday’s Classic technique interval start races, set to begin at 10 AM, followed by Sunday’s mass start Free technique competitions.

“We’re one of the top hosting facilities in Canada for races. Between the volunteers and the staff, they do an incredible job of making these events possible and really making them shine.”

But organizers say no event happens without dedicated volunteers, hundreds of them handling everything from timing and course setup to parking and feeding fellow volunteers.

“If you don’t have volunteers, or good, dedicated volunteers, it will reflect on the success of the event.”

What sets Caledonia apart isn’t just the excellent snow conditions, it’s the northern hospitality.

“What we want them to say is, boy, they treated us royally or we never had this done for us at other events. And that’s what your volunteers do.”

The competition features everyone from young children to master skiers. Admission is free for spectators.

“It’s an amazing opportunity to come out and experience what we have here at Caledonia and hopefully inspire some people, whether they’re young kids or older skiers, to actually start skiing.”

From the starting line to the finish, it’s Prince George’s volunteer spirit that transforms a provincial ski race into an event where athletes remember not just the competition, but the warm welcome that brought them back.
