PRINCE GEORGE – When people find themselves away from home, connecting with their culture can be a vital way to preserve their sense of identity and belonging. To celebrate this, the Prince George Latin Community has joined forces to present an all-Spanish spoken play at Theatre Northwest for the first time.

After more than a year of dedicated effort, a group of local residents has finally reached their goal of performing an all-Spanish-speaking production. Their hard work reflects not only their talents but also their passion for Latino culture and their commitment to sharing it with the broader community.

The local Latino community has consistently sought new avenues for expression, and this time, they have chosen to showcase their heritage through the performing arts. While the play is performed entirely in Spanish, organizers have ensured accessibility for all audience members by providing English dialogue on a screen, allowing everyone to follow along with the story.

The play “El Salto Atrás” (The Step Backwards) by Venezuelan playwright Leoncio Martínez is a satirical and humorous short work filled with hilarious situations. Set in Venezuela’s colonial era, it depicts the shock and horror of a family who consider themselves aristocratic upon discovering that their daughter’s newborn baby is Black, despite the father being German and the mother being “as white as snow.”

The play serves as a critique of colonial-era society, exposing the prejudices and obsession with social status that defined the period.

This landmark production will take place on Friday at 7 PM at Theatre Northwest. The single performance represents a significant milestone for the Prince George Latin Community and promises to be an evening of culture, laughter, and theatrical excellence.
