MPs ‘shocked’ and ‘devastated’ by Tumbler Ridge mass shooting

TUMBLER RIDGE — Prince George-Peace River-Northern Rockies MP Bob Zimmer said he’s “devastated” by the mass shooting in Tumbler Ridge Tuesday.

The mass shooting claimed the lives of nine people – including the lone suspect who died by suicide. Seven of the victims were under 13-years-old. Mounties also changed the death toll from 10, saying they originally believed one of the victims airlifted to hospital had died.

“I can only imagine what those parents are feeling considering those kids aren’t going to walk through the door,” he told CKPG News while on route to Tumbler Ridge today (Feb.11). “They were expected to walk through the door yesterday and they just didn’t come home.”

Zimmer said he was heading to Tumbler Ridge – a community of around 2,700 people -which is located in his riding.

“We’re just going to go to listen. Often mourning is just talking and just being there to hear what people have to say. It’s going to be an ongoing challenge for the community but Tumbler Ridge is healthy and strong. The community will survive but it’s time to mourn and we’re going to mourn with them.”

Neighbouring MP Todd Doherty represents Cariboo-Prince George and said he was “shocked and stunned.”

“I’m at a loss for words, our rural and remote communities are small and we’re related to everybody. If something goes on with one family, everybody is either related to that person or what have you. I can’t imagine what the community is going through right now.”

He said all we can do is “wrap our collective arms around them and hold them in our hearts.”

Doherty called first responders “heroes” for their quick response to the shooting. He said it likely saved lives in the process.
