PRINCE GEORGE – Concerns are rising over the future of a landmark building in Prince George, as discussions surrounding the fate of the Kopar Memorial Arena gain momentum. This issue is part of a broader conversation about revitalizing downtown Prince George. The union representing arena workers is eager to have its voice heard in these discussions, while the mayor stresses the need to involve both employees and the public in the decision-making process.

CUPE 1048 is firmly opposing any notion that the Kopar Memorial Arena could be demolished as part of the civic core plan proposed by the City of Prince George. This plan does not include the arena and instead makes way for a new development. Union president Reid Madisen-Boyce argues that the workers who operate the arena daily believe the historic structure can be preserved.

Madisen-Boyce highlights significant refrigeration upgrades completed in 2024, asserting that demolishing the building would waste taxpayer funds and jeopardize jobs and community ice time.

Mayor Simon Yu has stated that there is currently no approved demolition plan; however, he acknowledges that serious questions remain about the aging ice infrastructure. He notes that a newly issued request for proposals will assess whether renovation or a new facility is the better option.

As studies progress, both City Hall and CUPE 1048 agree that the decision on the future of the Kopar Memorial Arena should be based on open dialogue, ensuring that workers, residents, and taxpayers have a say in the process.
