Hotel plans for YXS grounded

PRINCE GEORGE – It was announced in April 2024. A proposed hotel was to have 120 rooms and a number of amenities such as a spa, gym and guest lounge. It was spearheaded by the Grown Hospitality Group and it was to be located in what was a parking lot at the west side of the airport, closest to the arrivals terminal.

But more than a year later, it is still a parking lot with no hotel. The Prince George Airport Authority will not comment, it did issue this statement which reads: “The Prince George Airport and Growth Hospitality Group mutually agreed to conclude the lease for the previously announced hotel project. Both parties consider the matter closed and will not be providing further comment.”

“At the end of the day, this is an agreement between business and the airport,” says Prince George City Councillor Tim Bennett. “I don’t know the full story in terms of why the decision was made, but ultimately, the decision was made. As a community, our biggest job is just to continue to advocate; our airport plays such a critical role, not only driving business, but driving tourism here to our community.”

The City has played host in the past for events that require plenty of hotel rooms. The Canada Winter Games in 2015, the 2019 World Para Nordic Skiing Championships and the 2024 Para Biathlon World Championships/World Cup Finals. It is set to host the Canadian Men’s Fastball Championships this summer. Hotel accommodations are critical to the success of these ventures.

“Having hotels is critically important infrastructure that we need in the community,” says Bennett. “I think most recently, you look at the Natural Resources Forum that brought 1,600 delegates to a conference and really pushed the hotel capacity. We want to continue to bring great events here. We have world class facilities, and they’re continuing to attract world world events here.

But Bennett says there will be future opportunities for these kinds of ventures, not just for tourism, but business.

“There are a lot of people who fly in the night before need to fly out the next morning. And having those resources out at the airport will just make that commute that much easier. So I hope that one day we’ll be able to see an airport hotel and be able to offer that service to our community and region.”

However, in the meantime, any plans for a hotel at the airport are grounded.
