To Your Health: Compounding

PRINCE GEORGE – If you’ve ever been prescribed a medication that doesn’t come as a standard pill or cream, there’s a good chance a compounding pharmacy was involved. Pharmacist Brianna Pallot says compounding plays a critical role in patient care by creating medications that simply aren’t available off the shelf.

At its core, compounding is about customization. It’s used when a commercially available medication isn’t available in the required form. That can include specially blended creams or liquid medications for people who have difficulty swallowing pills, including patients with feeding tubes.

Because compounding requires specialized training, equipment, and strict safety standards, it’s not a service offered by every pharmacy. In Prince George, there are three pharmacies equipped to compound medications, but particularly complex prescriptions sometimes need to be sent to Vancouver for preparation.
