Spruce Kings bounce back with blowout win over Powell River Kings

POWELL RIVER, B.C. — The Prince George Spruce Kings bounced back with a 8-1 win over the Powell River Kings Friday (March 13) night, one night after dropping a 5-2 decision at the Hap Parker Arena.

The Spruce Kings scored three in the first period and another three in the second en route to the blowout win in the battle of the Kings.

Marcus Lougheed, River Arnason and Mathis Laplante scored in the first period, before Ben Wright finally pulled one back for Powell River at 8:30 of the second period.

The onslaught continued as the Spruce Kings got goals from Ryan Wachtel and a pair from Tai Ushio to lead 6-1 after 40 minutes. Carter Hesselgrave and Arnason’s second of the night in the third period made it an 8-1 final.

Spruce Kings netminder Colin Reay stopped 20 of 21 shots to pick up the win. Powell River’s Devin Peck stopped 28 of 36 shots in the loss

Prince George (31-15-3-0) has an eight point lead in the BCHL’s Coastal East standings as both Chilliwack and Coquitlam have identical 27-18-2-1 records. The Spruce Kings have 65 points from 49 games while the Chiefs and the Express have 57 points from 48.

The Spruce Kings head to Alberni Valley for a 7 p.m. game this evening against the Bulldogs.

Their next home game at Kopar Memorial Arena is scheduled for next Saturday and Sunday (March 21 and 22) against the Express.
