MLA Clare fined for contravening Election Act
PRINCE GEORGE — Prince George-North Cariboo Conservative MLA Sheldon Clare has been fined for contravening the Elections Act and Local Elections Campaign Financing Act.
Clare must pay a $1,500 penalty for accepting anonymous contributions $4,000 over the anonymous contribution limit.
Director of Investigations for Elections BC Adam Barnes noted in his findings that accepting anonymous contributions above the legislated limit gives a candidate an advantage in that they do not need to collect the required information to ensure the contributions are from eligible sources.
Elections BC says the contributions were collected by multiple volunteers and some of the campaign team and handed to Clare for deposit in Quesnel at a meet and greet townhall on July 5, 2024 and at a booth at Billy Barker Days between July 18 to 21, 2024.
