PRINCE GEORGE – For the first time ever, Prince George will be hosting the Western Canada Cup Trampoline Gymnastics Tournament, and a Prince George duo will be competing as a part of Team BC. Taking place from May 8-10 at the Kin 1 Centre from 8:00 a.m.-8:00 p.m., Liam Bowe and Kennedy Baker say they can’t wait to compete in their home town.

“It’s pretty exciting, it’s a big thing for the club, big thing for PG to host this for the first time ever,” Baker said.

“It feels so nice that I don’t have to travel, and it’s cool that we’re hosting it, get to experience what it’s like to be the host,” Bowe added.

More than 200 gymnasts will be competing in the western provinces from Manitoba westwards, and each year the tournament rotates which province hosts. Last year, both Baker and Bowe travelled to Winnipeg, Manitoba, to compete, so they’re looking forward to putting on a good show for their community.

“It’s very nice to have family here. I mean, it’s pretty big to travel all the way there for the competition, so it’s nice that everybody gets to come see it live,” Baker said.

“We’re excited for people to come down and watch because they’ve probably never seen a trampoline competition, so we’re hoping that they come out to the Kin 1 Centre and check it out to see some live trampoline. It’s pretty exciting,” said Baker and Bowe’s coach, Carol Garcia.

Just days away from the tournament, the focus is on consistency and working on what you can control, so while the duo are practicing hard, they both say they aren’t doing anything radically different and sticking to the routines they know.

“I’m feeling pretty dialed in, these last few practices have been pretty good, Liam and I with our synchronized routines have been pretty on spot. So I’m pretty excited and looking forward towards it,” Baker said.

“I’m just sticking with the same, just practicing my hardest every time, and hopefully I’ll be good,” Bowe added.

That confidence extends to coach Garcia, who is expecting the Prince George pair to excel in their hometown amid hundreds of other competitors.

“They’re looking really good actually, so I’m hoping for some podium finishes,” Garcia said.

Bowe and Baker will be competing at various times over the weekend, and Garcia wanted to highlight Sunday at 2:00 p.m. specifically, as that is when the team event starts so you will have a great shot to see them both in action then, although they will be in action all weekend.
