Planned burn scheduled near Fort Nelson

Prep work will involve burning fuel around the perimeter of the target areas to keep the burns from spreading beyond their established boundaries.

“Burning will only proceed if conditions are suitable to achieve objectives and allow for appropriate smoke dispersal, though smoke may linger in the following days, particularly the morning following burn operations,” said BCWS officials.

“Despite all smoke management precautions, unintended smoke impacts are possible.”

The BCWS said the burns will mitigate wildfire hazards and act as joint operational training for BC Wildfire Service and Northern Rockies Fire Rescue crews.

“Safety is paramount in all prescribed burn operations. Each burn is guided by a detailed burn plan that defines objectives and outlines key requirements, including weather and fuel conditions, personnel and equipment needs, mitigation measures, and post-fire monitoring,” said the BCWS.

Smoke will be visible in Fort Nelson and to drivers travelling along Highway 97.
