PRINCE GEORGE – A women’s trail-walking group in Prince George is helping members boost their mental and physical health while making new friends outdoors.

Cheryl Livingstone-Leman started the “Trail Walking and Wellness for Women” program after she and other women felt uneasy about hiking alone on local trails.

“I started to feel a little apprehensive myself about going out on the trails alone,” she said. “There’s wildlife. There are moose and bears. There’s getting lost.”

The program, run by the West Bowl Community Association, brings women together for guided walks that focus on safety, wellness, and connection.

“It’s the sharing, the laughter, the camaraderie, the friendships that are built,” Livingstone-Leman said.

She says women in the group are anywhere from their 20s to their 80s, and many keep hiking together even after the official walks end. heart that it’s not a one-off. It’s a lifetime thing that people can do,” she said.

Livingstone-Leman adds that trail walking is an affordable way to stay active. All you need are comfortable shoes, some water, and simple outdoor clothes.

She says many women. She notes that many women join mainly for the social side but soon notice the health benefits as well. It’s going up. You’re moving, you’re walking,” she said. “There are so many benefits to trail walking.”

Livingstone-Leman believes that spending time in nature is a big part of improving mental wellness.

“We’ve got a really busy world and a lot going on,” she said. “To be able to disengage and go out into nature … just stop and really be mindful of nature.”
