PRINCE GEORGE — With the school year wrapped up, the Prince George Public Library is encouraging children and families to keep learning and exploring through its 2026 Summer Reading Club.

The free annual program, now underway at both the Bob Harkins and Nechako branches, is open to readers of all ages and abilities. Organizers say the initiative is designed to help children maintain reading habits throughout the summer while taking part in a variety of activities, events and prize opportunities.

Participants can register at either library branch, pick up a reading record and begin tracking their progress. Throughout the summer, families can take part in weekly programs, crafts, games and special events inspired by this year’s Under the Sea theme. In addition to weekly prizes available across age groups, the program also features two grand prizes for children between the ages of five and nine.

“Summer Reading Club is about more than books. It’s about inspiring curiosity, building confidence and creating lifelong readers,” said Steve Hamilton, Manager of Communications and Engagement at the Prince George Public Library. “Whether a child reads one book or one hundred, every page opens the door to new adventures.”

Library officials say the program plays an important role in helping children stay engaged academically during the summer break. Research has shown that regular reading over the summer can help maintain literacy skills, support educational success and encourage a lifelong love of learning. The Summer Reading Club also offers families an opportunity to explore library services, participate in community activities and make reading a regular part of their summer routine at no cost.

The Prince George Public Library is also recognizing the support of local businesses and community organizations that contribute to the program each year. According to the library, all weekly prizes are donated by community sponsors, helping celebrate young readers and enhance the experience for participating families.

Registration remains open throughout the summer, allowing families to join at any point during the program. More information about the Summer Reading Club and the library’s summer programming calendar is available at www.pgpl.ca.
